What to know about Chemical Peels

chemical peel is a body treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel off. The regenerated skin is usually smoother, brighter and clearer.

Types

Alpha Hydroxy Acid Peels (AHAs)
Are natural occuring acids such as glycolic, lactic, citric, malic, tartaric etc Each are derived from nature such as sugar cane, sour milk, citrus fruits etc
These are superficial peels to help tarded minor imperfections such as dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. They give a vibrancy and brightness to the skin.
They may cause a stinging, milkd redness and irritation and dryness.

Jessner Peels
These peels are a combination of 14% salicylcic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol. They are used to break down the skin further than an AHA peel, to eliminate acne, target fine lines and wrinkles, and lift pigmentation.
It is difficult to "overpeel" the skin due to mild percentages, but will give a noticeable result.
Visible peeling will occur in 3-4 days after the peel was performed.

Retinoic Acid Peel
This is a deeper peel than Jesser and AHA. It is only performed in a Physicians office to help remove acne scars, lift deeper pigmentation and rejuvenate the skin. It is usually performed in conjunction with a Jessner peel in the same appointment.
Peeling occurs in about 3 days following the treatment. For more dramatic changes to the skin, multiple treatments are required.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peels (TCA)
An intermediate to deep peel, ranging in percentage of 20-50%. They are used to smooth out fine surface wrinkles, remove superficial blemishes, correct skin pigmentation. Multiple treatments may be required. Peeling occurs on the 3rd day post treatment.

Guelph Medical Laser offers all 4 of these peels! Book your consultation know to figure out which one is best for your skin type and concerns!

Coming soon: PRP Facial (Vampire Facelift)

Our NEW PRP facial (or Vampire Facelift) is coming soon!!!

Have you heard of PRP? Platelet rich plasma (PRP) extracts of your own blood that contains three to five times more platelets, growth factors, and active proteins for tissue and injury healing. It has been used medically for years to accelerate wound healing; repair tendon, ligament and joint damage; heal diabetic ulcers; and help regrow muscle and bone. When PRP is placed back into the skin by injection or micro-needling, it initiates a localized stem cell response. Over the weeks and months following treatment, this stem cell response recruits collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts. The fibroblasts replace tissue that has been damaged or lost through the ageing process with healthy skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated.

This new PRP facial will consist of;
- Extracting a vile of blood
- Running it through the centevuse to extract the platelets
- Painting the platlet solution onto the skin
- Using micro-needling to open the skins surface to increase the penetration of the platlets

We are so excited to be able to restore health, brightness, and life back to your skin! If you are looking for a refreshed, rejuvenated and youthful appearance without looking frozen or over-plumped, without aggressive surgery, chemicals or toxins, then PRP is what you are looking for.

Give us a call and pre-book for this amazing treatment!

Eyes: Dark circles, puffiness and more.

They say the Eyes are the window to the soul. So what do our withered, tired eyes say about us?

Have you seen the new way to rejuvenate your eyes! Dr. Lamont has been injecting "Redensity" facial filler under the eyes and we have seen amazing results.
By injecting the filler, it can give back the loss of volume that causes the hollow look; and it reduces the appearance of "dark circles" which can be caused by vascular tissue becoming more prominent as we lose the fat volume under our eyes.

The pictures speak for themselves...

Keratosis Pilaris : "goosebumps" or "chicken skin"

Goosebumps can be fun.. when you're watching a scary movie, anxiously awaiting the news of a new baby, or expressing feelings to a loved one. They are NOT  fun when they are permanent and never go away.

This common condition is called Keratosis Pilaris, characterized by small rough red bumps usually on the arms or thighs.  It's not actually Goosebumps or chicken skin, but feels very similar to them. It is an over production of keratin (skin) cells over the sebaceous (oil) glands.

These pesky bumps, that affect nearly 50% of the popular, are usually the cause of genetics; especially to those with history of hay fever, seasonal allergies, eczema or asthma. The cold and humid temperatures of Canada can attribute to flare up as well.

Helpful tips :

Exfoliating. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that can irritate and cause more inflammation. A gentle manual exfoliation can help lift dead skin and open the pores. A chemical exfoliation, such as Retinol, can exfoliate deeper and allow the growth of new healthier skin cells.

Humidifier: Place a humidifier in your bedroom to avoid flare ups. A water softener will also help with this to soften the skin cells and avoid build up of skin cells.

Product Recommendations :

ZO Exfoliating Polish : uses ultra fine magnesium crystals to manual exfoliate dead skin, open up pores and lift dirt and debris. Gives a smoother, cleaner and toned complexion

ZO Radical Night Repair : contains 1% Retional (Vitamin A) stimulates new cell activity and collagen formation. Smoothes out uneven texture, produces fresh skin cells, promotes healthy cell production.

To purchase either product, please call us 519-837-1897 or visit our clinic today:)

Myths about Botox Cosmetic

MYTH #1 botox cosmetic is unsafe.
FACT While most commonly known as a wrinkle treatment, botox cosmetic has been available in Canada for over 22 years for the effective treatment of a range of medical conditions. It has a well-established safety record and is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world. It is reassuring to know an estimated 29 million treatment sessions have been performed worldwide for the past 20 years.

MYTH #2 botox cosmetic will results in the loss of facial expression

FACT It is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced physician, the treatment is designed to produce more natural and relaxed appearance. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of facial expression remain active.

MYTH #3 botox cosmetic is botulism (food poisoning)

FACT it is not botulism. It is a purified protein ad a finished medical prescription product with a known and proven safety profile obtained through extensive research and testing.
MYTH #4 botox cosmetic treatment is painful

FACT A treatment is quick and simple A very fine needed with small amount of liquid used so the pain associated with the injection is minimal.

MYTH #5 Injections can be give anywhere

FACT Botox is a technique-sensitive procedure. Make sure to visit a well-trained aesthetic-specialty physician for your treatment, and discuss the optimal results you wish to achieve.

MYTH #6 botox cosmetic is expensive

FACT The cost of botox cosmetic varies depending on the amount of product needed to achieve optimal results and the areas of the face that are being treated. As an example BOTOX typically ranges from 300-500 to treat the frown lines between the brows. Since the effects of the treatment can last up to 4 months, the cost is about $3-$5 per day.

MYTH#7 There are creams that are better than botox cosmetic

FACT There is no scientific evidence that supports that creams work better. Creams work well on the surface of the skin. botox cosmetic works below the surface of the skin to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form.

MYTH #8 botox cosmetic is a facial filler

FACT Unlike facial fillers, it doesn’t fill in facial lines or restore volume loss. It relaxes the muscles underneath the skin that cause the lines. Facial Fillers like Juvederm help to filler in facial lines and give back volume that is lost over time.

Importance of Wearing Sunscreen

The importance of sunscreenIt’s surprising how many people think that they don’t need to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. And how many of us have thought, "I don’t need sunscreen today, I’m only going to be in my car. "

Well, the New England Journal of Medicine recently posted a study of a 69 year old truck driver that I found rather shocking. The photo says it all. The right side of his face doesn’t look all that bad for 69, but the left side?
This man reported to his physicians that he had been driving a delivery truck for 28 years. What many of us don’t realize is that UVA rays (the ultraviolet rays that actually age your skin) easily penetrate glass into your skin. Over time, this unprotected exposure led to thickening of this gentlemans skin and dramatic reduction in elastin (the fibers that keep your skin taught and plump looking).

There are two ways to avoid the damaging rays of the sun. 1) Stay inside and hide
2) wear a physical sunblock.
Just like a long sleeved shirt or wide brimmed hat, a good sunscreen will contain an actual physical block like Zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide. Now, the good news is you won’t look like that lifeguard on the beach with the silly looking white nose. Suncreens have come a long way in the last few years. Some good ones to consider are Elta MdJane IredaleZO Skin Health or Vivier Pharma  All 4 have physical blocks that provide instant, broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and go on smooth and invisible.

If you have concerns about sun damage or just want to get more information on sun protection, please contact us 519-837-1897. We are happy to answer any of your questions.

Suffering from Redness?

Do you suffer from Redness? Rosacea? Inflamed acne scars?

Redness or rosacea suffers can be so frustrating. You are constantly in battle against the inflammation, irritation, dryness and/or scarring. You may have tried every cream in Shoppers Drugmart already and now you are on the hunt for something that actually works.

First thing is to decide which "type of redness" you suffer from. Is it broken veins on your cheeks?     Have you been diagnosed with Rosacea?   Do you have acne or acne scars?

If you complain about any or all of the above, there are treatments for you! Your professional skin consultant can help you determine what type of redness you have and decide whether you would be a candidate for :

- Laser Genesis
- Vivier Redness Relief Kit
- DermaPen

Laser Genesis is the most popular treatment to treat redness. It is a "vein laser"  (N.D Yag) that when used appropriately can break down tiny, superficial blood vessels that cause the appearance of an overall red face. It can also be used to break down some of the larger blood vessels, around the nose, across the cheeks etc.

Additionally, because of the heat it produces, Laser Genesis can kill surface bacteria, such as in acne or on Rosacea skin. This will help decrease inflammation and irritation on the skin and dry up pimples. At the same time, Genesis stimulates collagen production within the skin to help repair damaged skin. Collagen is the main ingredient in your skin that keeps your skin youthful, smooth and tight. Reinforcing your collagen regularly will smooth out skin texture and mild scarring, while slowing signs of aging, and promoting healthy skin

Laser Genesis can help repair and treat your skin in multiple ways.
- reduce redness and inflammation
- remove and shrink blood vessels
- kill bacteria
- promote collagen production
- smooth our imperfections - scarring, texture, fine lines

Your best option is to meet with a knowledgeable consultation to talk about your options. At Guelph Medical Laser, we have 3 highly trained Medical Aestheticians, 2 Nurses and Doctor. We are more than happy to help address any skin care issues you may have.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to:
  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills
  • Improve the look and feel of skin
Areas of sun damage may improve after chemical peeling.
After a chemical peel, skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so wear sunscreen every day. It should say "broad-spectrum" on the label, meaning it protects against the sun's UVA and UVB rays.

Who Is a Good Candidate For a Chemical Peel?

Generally, anyone is a good candidate for chemical peels. We offer 4 different types of chemical peels, so that we can tailor the peel to your skin type (colour) and condition.
We can treat mild acne & scarring, pigmentation, fine lines, uneventexture, and any other undisireable skin complexion.
Skin sagging, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond well to chemical peels. They may need other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures, such as laser resurfacing, or dermal fillers/Botox.

Before You Get a Chemical Peel

Tell your skin consultant if you have any history of scarring, reoccurring cold sores, or on photosensitive medication.
Before you get a chemical peel, your consultant may ask you to stop taking certain drugs and prepare your skin by using other medications, such as Retinol or glycolic acid.
Work with your consultant to determine the depth of your peel. This decision depends upon the condition of your skin and your goals for treatment, and how much peeling you can handle.

How Chemical Peels Are Done

The professional who does your peel will first clean your skin thoroughly. Then she will apply one or more chemical solutions -- such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid(TCA), salicylic acid, or lactic acid -- to small areas of your skin. This creates a controlled wound, letting new skin take its place.
During a chemical peel, most people feel a tingling to burning sensation that lasts about 1-3 minutes. Once the peel is removed you shouldnt have any tingling or burning. You may experience a warmth when touching the skin, but nothing more. Applying cool compresses can take away the sensation.

What To Expect After the Chemical Peel

Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. Peeling usually involves redness followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days. Mild peels may not have any peeling and can be repeated at 2 week intervals until you get the look you're after. Medium depth peels will have peeling for 3-7 days and can be done 2-4 week invervals.

After treatment, you'll need to avoid the sun for a few weeks since your new skin will be fragile. Treat your new fresh skin as baby skin. Do not let it get too much sun!!

Possible Complications

Some skin types are more likely to develop a temporary or permanent color change in the skin after a chemical peel. Sun exposure after a chemical peel or on photosensitive medications will make you more prone to this.
For people with a history of cold sore outbreaks, there is a small risk of reactivating cold sores. Your doctor can prescribe medication to prevent or treat

LHR: The Right Questions to Ask

Whether you're coming for Laser Hair Removal at Guelph Medical Laser or a clinic near you, here are some important questions to ask your Skin Consultant/Technician:

1. Where were you trained and/or certified? Can I see your certificate/diploma?
There is not 1 standard training for Laser Technicians. Make sure their education is reputable and legit. There should be diplomas or certificates hanging on the wall. Feel free to enquire about their schooling as much as you`d like.

2. Who is the Doctor on staff? How long have you been in business?
Be familiar with the business and the residing Doctor. There should be the option to meet with the doctor before treatment begins.

3. What laser do you use for hair removal, and which is best for my skin type?
Make sure she knows about her machine and which works better on certain skin types. She should be able to articulate why one is better than the other, specifying the right one for you.

4.  How many sessions will I need?
Know what you`re in for before you sign up. The average treatment number for permenant hair removal is 4-8 sessions. Ask about package deals to save a bit of money.

5. Can you treat me if I have a tan?
If they answer is yes: walk away. You cannoy preform LHR on a tanned skin, no matter how the technician justifies it. The only way to treat a tanned skin is on a very low setting with very little results.

6. Am I a good candidate?
Some types of hair make patients poor candidates for LHR. Greys, white or red hairs will not be effected by lasers. If you have very fine downy hair as well, you may not be a good candidate. Check with your Consultant.

7. How many laser hair removal treatments have you performed?
Make sure your technician is experienced, especially with multiple different skin types.

8. How many lasers are on the premises, are they rented or owned?
The more lasers they have, the greater the chances you will be treated appropiately and the safest for your skin colour and hair type. Be wary of rented machines because that insinuates they only do a few treatments a month.

9. What results should I expect?
Your technician should be able to articulate the estimated results; redness, hair loss; pain etc. Keep in mind, there are NO guarantees in this business. Everyone reacts differently to the lasers and youre results will vary from patient to patient.

10. How safe is Laser Hair Removal?
No harm in being reassure that LHR is 100% safe if preformed properly by a certified professional.

The goal in the end is to feel comfortable and confident in your technician, no matter how many questions you need to ask. We want you to feel relaxed and excited about your treatment!

Call 519-837-1897 to book your FREE consultation!
